In September 2016 I had decided to take on the Catalina Channel by swimming it. (No not the Catalina wine mixer...) 21 mile of pure ocean where I can't have any contact with anyone or thing. (well except for my fuel) I guess you can say I am a fish out of water. I decided to swim 21 miles to raise awareness for skin cancer. This was an experience I will never forget. I had a navigation boat to show me the way and a kayaker on to help keep me sane and carry my fuel (food and liquids). I also had a support crew that kept me going and made sure I accomplish my goal. I went through the Catalina Swim association and they made sure I finished it with safety and legally. It was an experience I will never forget.
1 in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in course of a lifetime. Most individuals are lucky enough to detect this cancer early. Unfortunately, many do not. Melanoma, which is a more dangerous type of skin cancer, it is often times detected too late to cure, due to the fast rate in which it spreads. Approximately 73,000 cases of Melanoma will be diagnosed in 2015 (www.cancer.org).
